Fandom is Fabulous Poster Session: Saturday 20.30-21.45 in County B
Fandom Poster-Making Session: Friday 11.45-13.00 in County B
Q: Which fandom can I make a poster for?
A: Any fandom you like. We will accept multiple submissions for all fandoms. So if you want a chance of being unique, go for a small fandom. But if you’re happy to share the squee, choose whichever one you like!
Q: What should go on my poster?
A: Anything you like, as long as it demonstrates why your fandom is fabulous. Some suggestions are: Fanart (with permission from the artist); fanfic recs; social media links; quotes; graphs; stats; meta or meta recs; photographs of fan activity (with permission from participants and copyright owners).
Posters can be hand-drawn/written, printed, collaged, or any combination of these, and any other format you can come up with.
As always, we need you to keep any art family-friendly. Fic recs can be any rating, but please include a warning for ratings more explicit than G. And please put the name of your fandom on the poster somewhere!
If you’d like to chat with people about your fandom later, include at least one of your social media IDs on your poster, and also display your badge name if you’re happy for people to find you at the con.
Please remember to ask permission from fan artists if you’re not using your own work, and credit them in whichever way they ask you to.
Q: What is the maximum size of my poster?
A: As big as you can print it! Small is also fine, but bear in mind that people might not be able to get right up close to your poster to read it. Don’t make the print or art too small! A collage of A4 pages is also fine.
If you’re making posters with us on the Friday, we will have A3 paper available. But if you want us to print anything for you we can only print on A4, which you can collage. We also hope to have flip chart paper, which is bigger, so you can collage on that if you like.
Q: Can I make more than one poster?
You can make more than one poster if you’d like to: but only one poster per fandom per person, please.
Q: What will happen at the poster session?
A: We’ve borrowed the academic concept here, but we will run the sessions rather differently to most academic versions.
Please turn up at the start of the poster session (8.30pm on Saturday). We’ll hand out white-tack (please don’t use anything else – we need to hand the hotel back in the state we took it in!) and ask you to put your posters up on the walls of the fanfic programme room.
Once all the posters are up, we’ll open the room to everyone. Take a wander round the room and have a look at all the submissions. When everyone has had a chance to take a good look, we’ll ask the creators to go and stand by their poster for a few minutes, in case people want to ask questions or chat with them about it. You can skip this part if you don’t want to do it. We don’t expect you all to stand around for ages. If you want to ask questions of another creator, just make a note of who they are and catch up with them once your own audience has dispersed.
Ideally, we’d like to leave the posters up for the rest of the con. But if you’ve become attached to yours and don’t want us to do this, you can take it away at the end of the session. And don’t forget to collect it at the end of the con if you’d like it back. If you’d like us to take it to Loncon 3 for you (see below), let us know, or just leave it behind and we’ll automatically take it with us.
Q: Do I absolutely have to identify myself with my poster?
A: No, you don’t have to. We can put your poster up for you if you ask us. You don’t have to stick around for the session or let anyone know which poster you made, if you’d rather not (we won’t tell anyone if you ask us not to).
Q: What if I found out about the poster session too late to prepare, or I didn’t have any time to work on it before the con?
A: We will be running a poster-making session on Friday 11.45-13.00 in County B. It’s fine to bring a pre-prepared poster with you (guidelines above). But if that isn’t possible, you can come along and make one with us. We’ll supply A3 paper, flipchart paper and some art materials. We recommend that you bring any printed material you want to use. We will have a small printer available, but if you need the internet to access images, you’ll need to bring it with you.

Exciting News – Tie-in poster session at Loncon 3, the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention!
Nine Worlds Fanfic will be attending Loncon 3, the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention at the London ExCEL Centre 14-18 August 2014. And we want to take your posters with us! We’re helping to run a similar poster session to ours, on Thursday 14 August in the Fan Activity Tent. After that, posters from both conventions will be displayed as a temporary exhibition at the Worldcon. If you would like us to take your poster with us to Loncon 3, please let us know, or just leave your poster at Nine Worlds and we’ll automatically take it with us. If you don’t want us to do this, please come and take back your poster before you leave the convention. Unfortunately we can’t promise to return any posters we do take, so take lots of photos at Nine Worlds!
And if you’re attending Loncon 3, come and say hi to us in the Transformative Fandom space!
